(The kumadori design used is an official motif licensed by Shochiku Co., Ltd.) This piece is not only a functional ink stick, but also an artistic expression of Nara sumi. It allows you to enjoy the visual beauty of its sculpted form, the deep color of the ink, and a natural fragrance that reflects the spirit of the kabuki play it represents. While it may not qualify as a true koboku (antique ink), it has aged gracefully and matured in character over time. It was handcrafted by Genshodo, a renowned ink maker based in Nara, a region long known as the birthplace of Japanese ink. Interestingly, the intensity of its chamomile scent varies slightly depending on the production batch. If you have a preference for stronger or lighter fragrance, feel free to mention it when ordering—we’ll do our best to accommodate you while supplies last. According to AI (or so it says!), chamomile is known to promote relaxation, reduce inflammation, and ease physical fatigue. Even before grinding, you may notice a gentle floral aroma, which deepens pleasantly as you begin to use the ink.

The sample characters shown below were written by our own shop owner using Bokurin, and you can see its rich black tone, making it perfect for kanji calligraphy practice and final works alike. According to our records, production ceased around 2005 (Heisei 17), likely marking the time of the maker’s retirement or closure. We are now offering this carefully preserved stock at its original price from that time, despite the ink having since aged and mellowed, which often enhances its quality. Description: This 2-chō size ink stick is a professional-grade product made by Kuretake in Nara, designed specifically for creating expressive calligraphy and ink artwork. By blending carbon particles of various sizes using modern scientific techniques, this ink faithfully recreates the elegant tones of antique koboku (aged ink). It produces beautifully nuanced strokes where the crisp outlines (kisen) stand out clearly against delicate feathering (nijimi), creating a harmonious balance between dry lines and subtle shading. The ink's aged-like black tone is both refined and expressive. Also suitable for mixing with blue-black ink (aoboku) for deeper tonal variation.
