This is a mixed-hair brush made from horse belly hair (60%) and sheep hair (40%), classified as jūmō (柔毛, soft hair). The use of horse belly hair is particularly rare—it is softer than ordinary horse hair—making this brush both unusual and highly valued. By combining two types of soft hair, the brush balances out the shortcomings of each material, resulting in a smooth and easy-to-control writing experience. Originally produced only in small test batches, it received excellent feedback, so this time we have commissioned a larger number. With its slightly elongated tip (shaft diameter 9.5 mm / hair length 65 mm), it retains the expressive character of horse belly hair while softening its quirks, offering a wide creative range for both calligraphy and artistic expression.

This rare brush is made exclusively from soft horse belly hair, known for its gentle texture and smooth flow, similar to goat hair. It is particularly favored by calligraphy instructors specializing in modern poetry and prose. This version is slightly larger than the previously released model, with a handle diameter of 9.5 mm and a hair length of 60 mm. Although the hair used is rare, we were fortunate to obtain enough material to produce a batch at once. For this reason, we are able to offer it at a reduced price. As long as supply remains stable, this pricing will continue.

Each fan measures about 11 cm in height (fan surface) and comes in five colors: light brown (pale pinkish tone), light blue, grass green, purple, and white. The term “mame” (豆) in Japanese literally means “bean,” and when used as an adjective it conveys the sense of “small, compact, and cute.” Thus, Mame-Uchiwa refers to a miniature version of the traditional Japanese fan (uchiwa). Unlike folding fans, an uchiwa is a rigid, flat fan with a handle, historically used in Japan for cooling, festivals, and decoration. These miniature fans allow you to add your own calligraphy, poetry, or artwork, turning them into unique personalized pieces that can be used for gifts, displays, or interior decoration.

The unique texture and subtle shimmer of the paper highlight the elegance of Japanese craftsmanship, bringing a refined beauty to your calligraphy or written works. In Japan, a tanzaku is a long, narrow strip of paper traditionally used for writing poetry such as waka and haiku. Today, they are also enjoyed for calligraphy practice, artistic expression, or as decorative displays. The surface of this paper is treated using the traditional “momi-gami” (揉み紙) technique, where washi paper is carefully crumpled and pressed to create a distinctive wrinkled texture. This process enhances softness, depth, and light-reflecting qualities, giving the paper a luminous elegance. In Kyoto, this technique has been refined over centuries as part of the region’s distinguished paper-crafting tradition, making each scroll not only functional but also a piece of cultural heritage. Each hanging scroll is individually handmade by skilled artisans, finished with a pearl-like sheen that enhances its decorative appeal. The set comes in five vibrant colors — red, blue, green, yellow, and purple — allowing you to match them with the seasons, occasions, or your personal mood. More than just beautiful in appearance, their lightweight and practical design makes them easy to use as stylish interior accents. Whether displaying calligraphy, poetry, or handwritten messages, these scrolls provide a heartfelt and artistic way to present your work.
