This is a special 3-piece set of Yamato E-sumi: a unique type of colored ink made from the same natural ingredients as traditional sumi ink, but designed for delicate monochrome painting and soft color expression.

The ink sticks are used just like traditional sumi—ground on an inkstone with water—making it easy to control the strength, shading, and gradation. Each ink produces a richly pigmented, slightly tinted black when concentrated, and reveals more color as it is diluted.
