The Hakutōken (白陶硯) is a white ceramic inkstone specially designed for grinding non-black inks such as gold, silver, vermilion, and colored sumi, as well as gold ink cakes used for sutra copying.
While standard black inkstones can also be used, they interfere visually with the true color of non-black inks, making it difficult to assess their hue accurately during grinding. Moreover, as traditional inkstones wear down with use, fine stone particles can mix into the ink, which is particularly problematic when using white or light-colored inks.
The white surface of the Hakutōken prevents such interference, allowing you to see the ink’s natural tone clearly and grind with greater purity. A small indentation in the “umi” (the deep part of the inkstone) is specially included for grinding gold ink cakes (kinjō).
