This is a circular frame (40 cm diameter) made from charred paulownia wood (yakigiri finish), designed for hanging shikishi (square calligraphy or art boards).
The wood is treated using the traditional Japanese “yakigiri” (焼桐) technique, in which the surface of paulownia is lightly charred. This process not only enhances the wood’s durability—providing natural resistance to insects and moisture—but also brings out a rich texture and deep color unique to this method.
Paulownia wood (kiri) itself has long been prized in Japan as a premium material.
