This is a set of five sheets of hankaishi-size calligraphy paper, decorated with a refined ichimatsu checkerboard pattern created through traditional foil-pressing (haku-oshi) on shimmering bronze-red paper. The result is a surface of elegance and festive brilliance.
The paper has been specially treated for calligraphy and painting: it does not repel ink, but since it does not absorb quickly, we recommend writing with rich, dark ink and allowing the work to dry completely for the most beautiful results.
In Japan, Shōgatsu (New Year) is the most important celebration of the year, marked by visits to shrines, family gatherings, and decorations that symbolize renewal, prosperity, and good fortune. Gold, red, and auspicious patterns such as the ichimatsu motif are often used in New Year’s ornaments and crafts, as they express wishes for longevity, continuity, and prosperity.
With its festive bronze-gold sheen and auspicious ichimatsu design, this “Akatsuki” paper is perfectly suited for New Year’s calligraphy, celebratory messages, or seasonal artworks. It not only provides a canvas for writing but also conveys the joy and brilliance of welcoming a new beginning.
