The “Uneri-boku” inkstick, produced by the renowned ink maker Wada Eijudō, was originally crafted especially for kanji calligraphy. Its deep, expressive tones and clear gradations, however, also make it suitable for kana calligraphy, giving it remarkable versatility. Affordable in price, it is highly recommended as a practice ink for serious learners.
Wada Eijudō was celebrated as one of Japan’s master ink artisans, and even today his works remain sought after by enthusiasts. Among his creations, Uneri-boku is notable for being available in the 1.5-chō size, offering authentic quality at a comparatively accessible cost.
The name “Uneri” (畝) carries poetic imagery: it can refer to the furrows of a field lined in strength and order, or the undulating motion of waves, both evoking a sense of rhythm, flow, and vitality. This imagery reflects the ink’s character—producing lines with both structure and movement, suited for the expressive strokes of calligraphy.
This particular stock comes from a limited collection inherited when our predecessor, who had close ties with Wada Eijudō, acquired many pieces upon the workshop’s closure. Supplies are extremely limited.
One unique aspect of traditional inksticks is that, as they age, they are said to “kareru” (wither gracefully)—meaning the ink actually matures, gaining richer tones and smoother texture over time. Thus, each stick not only represents fine craftsmanship but also becomes even more valuable with age.
