手漉きの唐紙。
青壇皮という長い繊維と稲藁が4：6ですかれています。
長い繊維が棉料単宣よりも多いため紙の密度が下がり滲みにくいんですが、薄い紙で羅紋と言われる細かな簾の目が美しい模様になっていて単宣にはない滲み表現が味わえます。
滲みを楽しむ薄めの紙になります。

This is a handmade Chinese xuan paper (tōshi, 唐紙), crafted from a blend of long blue sandalwood fibers (40%) and rice straw (60%). Because of the higher ratio of long fibers compared to ordinary danxuan paper, the sheet has lower density and less absorbency, resulting in reduced bleeding.

It is a thin paper with a fine rammon (bamboo screen-like) texture visible across the surface, creating a subtle decorative pattern. This characteristic produces unique ink effects that cannot be achieved with standard danxuan paper, making it especially enjoyable for exploring expressive ink bleeds and tonal variations.

It is important to note that this is not “Made in China” in the sense of mass-produced goods. Rather, it is a product of China’s long calligraphy tradition, where xuan paper has been handcrafted for centuries and highly valued by scholars and artists.

Like inksticks, which are said to mature and improve as they age (“kareru”), high-quality xuan paper also benefits from being stored over time. As it “ages gracefully,” the fibers settle, and the paper develops a stability that allows ink to absorb more smoothly and evenly, enhancing the quality of calligraphy.

Compared to Japanese washi, which is generally prized for its resilience, crisp line quality, and soft surface, Chinese xuan paper offers greater fluidity, delicacy, and ink dispersion, resulting in a very different aesthetic experience. Many calligraphy enthusiasts cherish xuan paper for this unique expressive quality, which allows the ink to “breathe” on the page.

This particular paper is from 2006 stock, and has therefore had years to season naturally—making it an excellent choice for those who wish to experience the refined beauty of matured, traditional Chinese handmade paper.
