This is “Ukin,” a highly regarded ink stick once produced by Wada Eijudō, a legendary ink craftsman whose workshop in Suzuka is no longer in operation.
Wada Eijudō was known among calligraphers and painters for his masterful use of traditional rapeseed oil soot (古法菜種油煙), creating ink with a vivid, well-saturated black that develops depth and elegance as it is ground.
Although the exact production method is now lost, Ukin remains cherished by collectors and experienced brush artists for its smooth grinding quality and beautiful, lively black tone.
Because both the craftsman and workshop have since passed into history, this ink stick is considered a rare and highly sought-after piece among enthusiasts of traditional Japanese ink.
Origin: Suzuka, Japan (Wada Eijudō workshop, now closed)
Material: Traditional rapeseed oil soot ink
Type: Ichō-gata (single mold type)
Condition: Vintage, stored carefully
A valuable ink for those who appreciate the depth, history, and irreplaceable character of master-crafted sumi.
