This piece is created by Shinseidō, the sole surviving ink-crafting workshop in Suzuka, Mie, once a renowned region for sumi ink production.
Shinseidō produces this ink as a decorative and symbolic item to be placed in homes, calligraphy studios, or workspaces.
The owl motif carries a wordplay blessing in Japanese:
“Fukurō (owl)” sounds like “Fuku ga kuru” (fortune comes) and is also associated with “Fukuro = no hardship / no suffering” (不苦労).
For this reason, the owl is widely considered a charm for protection, peace, and smooth days ahead.
Although it is primarily designed for display and comes fixed to a wooden base, it can be carefully removed and used as a functional ink stick if desired.
When ground, it produces a gentle, dignified black suitable for calligraphy or poetic inscriptions.
Origin: Suzuka, Mie, Japan (Shinseidō)
Use: Display / Good-luck charm / Can be used as ink with careful removal
Motif Meaning: “No hardship” / Protection / Peaceful fortune
A thoughtful and meaningful piece that brings together craftsmanship, culture, and well-wishing sentiment.
