“Hekigen” (碧玄) is a refined blue-black ink stick crafted by Shinseidō, the last remaining ink artisan in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture—once known as a major center for traditional sumi ink. As a certified traditional craft, Suzuka Ink (Suzuka-zumi) carries the legacy of centuries of ink-making excellence.

This particular ink is a bamboo soot-based aozumi (blue ink), known as chikusei-zumi. It is suitable for both calligraphy and ink painting.

In rich ink (nōboku), it produces a deep, lustrous blue-black tone, with a subtle cool undertone that becomes more pronounced depending on lighting and paper texture.

In lighter or diluted applications, the ink reveals a soft bluish hue within the black, offering excellent depth and control with minimal feathering.

Perfect for both traditional works and expressive modern compositions, Hekigen invites nuanced exploration of ink tone and atmosphere.
