A Rare Legacy Ink from a Discontinued Suzuka Master
“Hiryū Zaiten” (飛龍在天, Flying Dragon in the Sky) is a rare and historically significant ink stick originally produced by the now-defunct Eijudō Wada, a highly respected ink maker once active in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture—a region formerly renowned as one of Japan’s major sumi ink production centers.
Eijudō Wada ceased operations over 20 years ago, but this particular stock was recently discovered and preserved at Shinseidō, the last remaining active ink maker in Suzuka. We are honored to offer these sticks at their original price, as they were acquired directly from Shinseidō under the same terms.
While detailed records are scarce, we have verified through surviving ink charts that this is an oil soot ink (yuenboku) made from rapeseed oil soot, a prized material known for producing deep, rich blacks with a soft luster. The name “Hiryū Zaiten” evokes a powerful and ascending spirit, making it especially fitting for expressive calligraphic or artistic works.
